There is no one who would have me – I can’t cook.

I’m just someone who likes cooking and for whom sharing food is a form of expression.

I could lie and say my wife cooks for me, but she doesn’t. My wife has never learnt cooking but she has great cooks at home.

When I cook for my family on Christmas, I make feijoada, a South American dish of roasted and smoked meats like ham, pork, beef, lamb, and bacon – all served with black beans and rice. It’s festive but different.

Writing and cookery are just two different means of communication.

Cooking certain dishes, like roast pork, reminds me of my mother.

It’s so tedious writing cookbooks or writing the recipes because I’ve never been much of a measurer. But to write a book, you have to measure everything.

I have taken the marshmallows off the sweet potatoes, however. They would make a big pan of sweet potatoes and cover it with marshmallows. My kids would love it if I would do that for them!

My grandmother was the greatest cook in the world. She could just go in there, the whole kitchen would look like a tornado hit it and then she’d come out with the best food. Then she’d sit at the table and she wouldn’t eat!
