It’s funny that until I actually met my husband, I never thought I’d get married.

I do not believe in political movements. I believe in personal movement, that movement of the soul when a man who looks at himself is so ashamed that he tries to make some sort of change – within himself, not on the outside.

He who has never failed somewhere, that man can not be great.

There’s one of my new poems actually – is a good example of where my poetry has ended up. My earlier river poetry was more like a cross between Shelley and Dylan Thomas.

Every person is the creation of himself, the image of his own thinking and believing. As individuals think and believe, so they are.

I stopped and gazed on the little dull man who was being paid to be a teacher of teachers. I turned and walked to the door, slammed it closed with a bang, and broken glass crashed to the floor. There was uproar behind me in the class, which did not interest me at all.

Nothing has been given to me.

If you are not too large for the place you occupy, you are too small for it.

No experience is a cause of success or failure. We do not suffer from the shock of our experiences, so-called trauma – but we make out of them just what suits our purposes.

I mean to make myself a man, and if I succeed in that, I shall succeed in everything else.
